MID DISTANCE: 10DOG- 120 MILE


PURSE:  $ 7,000


Mid distance : 120 mile will be run continuosly consisting of 60 miles up to L'Amble Community Centre and then a 8 hour layover. After the layover you will return to the fairgrounds in Marmora. Trail will be bush, railbed, and logging road, road crossings are limited. Race starts at fairgrounds and finishs back at the fairgrounds.

Marmora 120 mile Sled Dog Race Rules

 

The course shall be clearly laid out with sufficient number of visible markers:


a) Right turn marker on right 40 to 70 feet before turn.

b) Left turn marker on left 40 to 70 feet before turn.

c) Straight ahead yellow arrow or green plate.



I) ELIGIBILITY OF DOGS & TEAMS


a) No dog shall be brought from a kennel where hepatitis, leptospiosis, or other contagious disease exists.

b) No Equipment or clothing shall be brought if it has come in contact with a dog having a contagious disease.



II) NUMBER OF DOGS REQUIRED


a) 120-mile race must start the race with no more than ten (10) dogs and finish with no less than six (6) dogs.

b) NO dogs may be added after the start of the race.

c) Dogs may be marked and/or photographed for identification purposes.

d) Any team coming to the start line, which in the opinion of the Race Marshall and/or Vet, is unfit or incapable of completing the course will be disqualified.



III) MINIMUM AGE OF DRIVERS


a) 120 Mile race, 18 years of age or older. Exception: (16 & 17 year old may race with expressed consent of legal parent or guardian.)

b) Race Marshall can make exceptions at his/her discretion.



IV) LIABILITY


Each musher shall hold the race giving organization, the sponsor and/or other contributors, (i.e.: the sponsor and contributors to race giving organization as distinguished from the sponsor of the individual musher), harmless against claims based on alleged actions or inaction by the musher, his dogs, agents or others acting on his behalf. Further, the race giving organization has the unqualified and unrestricted authority to authorize the race sponsor to photograph and otherwise collect information for advertising, public relations or other publicity purposes. Each musher shall sign and documents requested by the race giving organization or evidence the forgoing. Any musher not wishing to sign such documentation will not be allowed to participate in the race and his entry will be refunded.



V) MEDICATIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS


a) Prohibited drugs are all those deemed harmful to the dog and to the sport, including stimulants, depressants, local anesthetics and analgesics.

b) Permitted drugs are those deemed not harmful to the dog and to the sport including, antibiotics, antibacterial and synthetic steroids.

c) Vitamins are permitted.

d) The race giving organization may require that all dogs undergo a physical examination prior to the start and at any time during the race, by a certified veterinarian.

e) The race giving organization is responsible for notifying contestants of the time and place of this exam.

f) Any musher who fails to have his/her dog(s) examined will not be permitted to run the race and his entry fee will not be refunded.

g) The Race Marshall & Veterinarian will check all teams prior to the race.

h) At his exam the certification or letter of acknowledgement from the mushers vet regarding vaccination for distemper and rabies will be requested and required. Failure to present such documentation will necessitate disqualification at the Race Marshall’s discretion.



VI) EQUIPMENT


a) Drivers, teams and equipment shall be available for inspection in the holding area one (1) hour prior to the start of the race.

b) Sleds and sled bags must be capable of adequately carrying the driver, a dog and required equipment.

c) The sled must be equipped with a suitable snub rope, snow hook and a suitable brake.

d) Bib number must be clearly visible on the musher or the sled at all times during the race.

e) Survival gear must include, booties for each dog harnessed at the start of the race, cold weather clothing for the musher, sleeping bag, hand ax or saw, first aid kit, food for the musher and emergency rations (five pounds minimum) and a plastic bag large enough to totally cover an expired dog. This dog food must be in the sled at the finish of the race unless an emergency has occurred. You must carry one snub line for each dog that you can drop.

f) All harnesses and sleds must have reflective material clearly visible on both sides

g) Each musher must carry two working headlights.



VII) PROHIBITED


a) Muzzles collars that can be hooked, full choke collars and whips of any kind.

b) The Race Marshall has the exclusive right to search the musher and/or his/her sled at any time he has reasonable suspicion that any of the above are being used. Refusal to submit to this request results in the suspension from the race with no refund.



VIII) STARTING PROCEDURE


a) Starting position shall be determined by a draw, which will be held at the drivers meeting.

b) The order of the draw will be based upon the date of receipt of the entry form and fee.

c) Entries received on the same date will be treated alphabetically.

d) The Race Marshall may draw for an absent musher.

e) Bib number will correspond with position number in the parking area (when available)

f) Your starting time from the layover will be 8 hours plus any advantage obtained from your starting position.



IX) TRAIL PROCEDURE


a) A driver may ride, run, pedal or snowshoe as and when he/she wishes.

b) Abuse of a dog with or without an instrument is prohibited.

c) Interference by a driver with a competing team is prohibited.

d) I a musher becomes incapacitated on the trail or at any time during the race a substitute is not permitted to finish the race competitively, however a substitute may finish the race, if the musher requests, for dog conditioning only.

e) All dogs must be hitched in the team or to the sled or carried in the sled. No loose leaders will be permitted.

f) All injured, fatigued or sick dogs must be dropped off at the checkpoints only. Once a dog is dropped from the race. It may not re-enter the competition.

g) One day’s ratio must be left at the checkpoint when the dog is dropped if the handler is not available for pickup.

h) Any dropped dog must be marked by the checkpoint official.



X) RULES OFF THE TRAIL


a) Team and driver must follow the route designated by the race giving organization. The exception is if the musher cannot find the trail due to weather closing it or other acts of God, he may proceed on to the next checkpoint the best way he can as long as he doesn’t shorten the length of the trail traveled, i.e.: cutting off a loop in the trail or taking a shorter route than laid out.

b) No litter of any kind may be left on the trail; camps must be thoroughly cleaned.

c) Mushers setting up camp must clear the trail before doing so.

d) Every driver must sign in at each checkpoint and may not proceed until they have done so.

e) No switching of dogs between teams will be permitted after the race has started.

f) Two or more teams may not be tied together in any way.

g) The Race Marshall or Veterinarian will have absolute authority over the dog teams. Their judgement as to mandatory rest, withdrawal of a dog or dogs from the race or any other condition relative to dog care on the trail is final.

h) No dog may be added after the start of the race.

i) The Race Marshall or his/her officials may detain a team for the purposes of repair or replacement of the equipment, if in that official’s opinion such equipment may be injurious to the dogs.

j) No musher may, without permission, tamper with another musher’s dogs, dog food or gear.

k) No musher may receive any dog food from any other source between checkpoints unless emergency is declared by the Race Marshall.

l) Mushers may assist each other between checkpoints.

m) Mushers may not accept assistance from any type of motorized vehicles.

n) Mushers will not permit any of their dogs to be carried by any other team or vehicle unless checked out of the race by a race official.

o) Outside assistance will be permitted if in the mushers opinion his/her team is out of control and it is requested by him/her/

p) No pacing of a team by a vehicle, another team not in the race, or person other than the musher will be permitted.

q) Any driver who voluntarily withdraws, or is disqualified by the Race Marshall, shall proceed to the nearest checkpoint and make the fact known to a race official. Failure to do this will result in a double entry fee in any future racing opportunities with this organization.

r) There will be no snacking on the trail.



XI) PASSING


a) An overtaking team has the right of way over a preceding team when the overtaking team comes within fifty (50) feet of the team ahead.

b) Under these conditions the preceding team must make way for the overtaking team and bring his team to a full stop if requested to do so.

c) The overtaken team may request and receive right of way as above when:

1. After four (4) minutes or one (1) Mile.

2. At anytime both teams agree.

d) A passing musher with a tangled team as the result of the pass may require the following driver to wait no longer than one minute.

e) Teams following shall maintain an interval of at least one team’s length.



XII) CUT OFF TIME


a) Cut off time will be established at the drivers meeting.



XIII) FINISH PROCEDURE


a) No incoming team has the right of way over another within one (1) mile of the finish line.

b) The finish point of the team will be the lead dog, unless otherwise determined by the Race Marshall prior to the start of the race.

c) In the event of a loose team crossing the finish line ahead of the musher, the finish point will be the driver.



XIV) PIT CREWS


a) Pit crews are permitted and encouraged.

b) Only the musher is allowed to care for the dog team at the layover. Pit crews may assist the team at road crossings.

c) Pit crews may not touch a team on the trail or at the checkpoint except under emergency conditions.



XV) CHECKPOINTS


a) Dogs may not be boxed unless that dog is being dropped.

b) All refuse must be cleaned up before the team is allowed to leave the checkpoint. Any team leaving a mess will be assessed a thirty (30) minute penalty.



XVI) CONDUCT


a) Drivers are responsible for the conduct of their dogs and handlers.

b) Unsportsman like conduct and belligerence will not be tolerated and will result in disqualification with no refund, (i.e.: swearing, yelling at volunteers etc.)



XVII) PROTESTS


a) The Race giving organization will provide each driver. Upon request, a protest form to be completed by the musher registering a complaint of observed violations of the race rules.

b) The official protest will be submitted to the Chief Race Marshall.

c) A fee of fifty (50) will accompany this form and may be not be refunded.

d) In the case of protest the concerned parties may request a hearing, the Race Marshall at his/her discretion will grant such a hearing.

e) When the protest is filed against another musher, he may finish the race and the final decision on disqualification or time penalty will be made when the race is over.



XVIII) DISCIPLINARY ACTION


The Race Marshall may impose a warning or disqualification or time penalty for an infraction of the race rules or upon the recommendation of the veterinarian. The decision of the Race Marshall is final.
